How are SIPs made?

A basic SIPs panel is made from Orientated Strand Board (OSB) facing boards with a CFC free/ ODP zero closed cell Polyurethane core. SIPs can be used to construct the floor, walls and roof of a building enabling uniform detailing at interfaces providing continuity of insulation and minimal air leakage.

Historically sandwich panels have been used in the UK mainly for buildings with high thermal requirements. At McVeigh Insulations we have been using this technology for the construction of Cold Stores, Real Snow Ski Slopes and Ice Climbing Walls for many years (see photograph of 1940s cold stores built by McVeigh Insulations using early SIPs technology). As the Building Regulations are demanding more energy efficient structures the sandwich panel solution is becoming more favourable.
