Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)
What are SIPs?
SIPs are structural insulated panels used to
construct buildings. SIPs have been used extensively in the
USA over the past 50 years but are now becoming a popular choice in the UK for
timber-based construction. SIPs are environmentally friendly and
ecologically sound. SIPs are the innovative
building construction method of the twenty first century allowing the rapid
deployment of buildings for domestic and commercial use.
Schools, hotels and retail developments are realising the benefits SIPs can
bring to a project, we are providing SIP solutions for buildings reducing or in
some cases eliminating the need for a structural frame using the inherent
strengths a SIP can provide.
A SIP provides an ideal substrate for overfixing rainscreens (see
Architectural Cladding for more information). This can be done on site
in the traditional manner or off site providing quicker system build
techniques. These Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) solutions are becoming
increasingly popular on time sensitive projects.
How are SIPs made?
A basic SIPs panel is made from Orientated Strand Board (OSB)
facing boards with a CFC free/ ODP zero closed cell Polyurethane core. SIPs
can be used to construct the floor, walls and roof of a building enabling
uniform detailing at interfaces providing continuity of insulation and minimal
air leakage.
Historically sandwich panels have been used in the UK mainly for buildings with
high thermal requirements. At McVeigh Insulations we have been using this
technology for the construction of Cold Stores, Real Snow
Ski Slopes and Ice Climbing Walls for many years
(see photograph of 1940s cold
stores built by McVeigh Insulations using early SIPs technology). As
the Building Regulations are demanding more energy efficient structures the
sandwich panel solution is becoming more favourable.
Why Choose SIPs? Benefits of SIPs
SIPs are used all over the world because of their superior
strength and quality build. Homes and commercial
buildings that use this innovative technology have survived hurricanes,
earthquakes and tornados, when other buildings around have not. In the UK SIPs
are more than capable of withstanding climate extremes as well as maintaining
their strength throughout the years and providing a safe and secure living
environment.
Benefits of SIPs
-
Environmentally Friendly
SIP timbers are used from a sustainable source and are made with an
ODP zero insulated core.
-
Speed
Quick installation is made possible by using large pre-fabricated
units. Envelope completion allows following trades to start earlier.
-
Strong and Lightweight
Rationalise foundation design. Nature of the panels means open spaces
can be constructed without the need for additional framing.
-
Rooms within Roofs
Fully utilise the roof space of buildings with the long span
capabilities of SIPs.
-
Defects and Shrinkage
Buildings made in factory conditions helps reduce defects. Comparable
to timber frame construction shrinkage and subsequent making good is minimal.
-
Minimal Waste & Maximum Recyclability
All panels cut to length and apertures formed in the factory result in
minimal site waste. Off cuts from engineered panels in our workshop can be
recycled.
-
Keep your energy for longer
Highly insulated buildings with minimal thermal bridging air leakage.
-
External finishes
Many external finishes can be applied to SIPs. From render, rainscreen
and weatherboards to brick slips, tiles or conventional brick outer skin. All
can be applied off the critical path of the overall project duration.
How can I use SIPs in my building project?
SIPs can be bought in kits that can be customised to a particular customer's
needs. You can read more about SIPs here and how McVeigh
Insulations can help you. Alternatively call McVeigh Insulations on
